if the overall view is to get out and it stays that way, then you can bet your bottom dollar there will be no referendum !

What do you expect from a poll sponsored by the 'Mail' ??
Hmm... 51-49 is basically a dead heat when it comes to most polls, so one ought to be careful to read too much into it. But I wouldn't be too surprised if now, of all times, after several months of the Greek bailout crisis, and now the large numbers of migrants/ refugees coming into Europe, that some people might be pushed towards leaving the EU. Even if you have sympathy for the migrants, the way the crisis is being handled is far from brilliant.

The only poll that counts is two years away, though. But this poll -- and even the one in July that gave it to the "in" camp 54-46 -- suggests that it is going to be a very close result. The debate before then is going to be very important.
Fair comment. What I cannot understand is the closeness of the vote. Where I am it seems that it's 75%+ in favour of leaving.

I admit that 51-49 in a sample size of 1,000 is statistically pretty close to a dead heat.

It's the size of the movement since the last poll (46-54 in July) by the same company (Survation) which is perhaps a bit more significant.
Due to the invasion from Africa, this number will increase significantly.

Whereas before many people who I spoke to were a little unsure, after hearing the tales of mass unemployment if we leave.

Now there is going to be less jobs available, due already to the increasing influx of immigrants both from within the EU and also from other countries.

With the possibility of all those migrants gaining German citizenship, they also will have the right to come to the UK if they want to.
They call it a 'shock' opinion poll, but I don't think anyone is really too shocked. I think the gap will widen and when the time comes the electorate will vote to leave Europe.
A subject that is often discussed around here and like jackdaw I can't believe it will be that tight. If everybody votes how they talk it will be a landslide in favour of leaving.
^I agree.

I think there has to be.
If you were Dave and there was no credible opposition, would you be having a referendum?
Where are the 'don't knows'?

They will hold the key to whether we stay or leave.
Under weak 'U Turn' Cameron, who knows what can happen regarding the promised referendum.

He couldn't care less, he has already announced he won't be standing for office, next time.
I spent thirty years writing software for the market research business. A sample one thousand is meaningless.
Vote out eh? Fill in chunnel coz of less trading. Expensive european holidays - prohibitive to working class. Foreign manufacturers will set up in cheaper sites (taking our jobs) in east europe for increased trade. No more cheap homes in the Med, etc etc.

GB returns to 1950s, insignificant islands.
I don't believe these islands have ever been considered insignificant.
When did you last write a programme?
It certainly came as no shock to me. NJ and I have both mentioned the folly of remaining in the EU this week.
We have the UK P.M. going ,cap in hand, to try to negotiate terms for the UK to remain in Europe.Grovelling to the self appointed Fuhrer Smirkel and her Reichs marshall Hollande who believe they can bully the rest of the so called partners in Europe.
Without consultation Smirkel arbitarily tears up the Dublin Convention overnight .She has certainly learnt some French lessons there when it comes to picking and choosing what laws, conventions, treaties, agreements they pick and choose to suit themselves.
They gang up on the UK for failing to do our bit but do not acknowledge we have taken more immigrants than Germany since 2000 and have paid, second to USA, the most towards Syrian Relief Aid than the rest of Europe.
We chose not to be signatories to Schwengen and when their failure to do so bites them on the butt they suddenly threaten to tear it up.
They jump into the Euro and when that becomes decidely wobbly they call on us to bail them out.
The UK is merely a convenient prop and whipping boy to Europe. With friends like that who needs enemies. My cross will firmly go for getting out of a complete corrupt shambles.
