Just beware anyone who was taken in by Labours promises yesterday. Gordon Brown used stealth taxes to fund his wasteful plans during his time as Chancellor. Do you remember the number of days you had to work before you spend your own money? I know Our Council Tax doubled over Labour years and it hasn't risen since 2010

Mr Miliband gave a bravura performance yesterday. Sadly most people probably weren't watching. Or listening. And now the Tory press has the hatchets out.
All I ask of the papers is that they at least present the different parties' manifestos with a degree of balance before launching into the predictable Miliband/Farage/Clegg-bashing. TV channels have to abide by rules during election campaigns. It is a shame that the press can't be made to do so too.

Sadly Labours only mantra seems to be "The Tories only care about the rich" which they seem to think if they say it enough people will believe it.
I am old enough to remember a number of labour governments, and they all seem to bankrupt the country and we need to Tories to come back in an sort out the mess.
I hope the public don't fall for it again.

All indirect taxes are stealth taxes. All use them. The Tories tend to be worse since they like to pretend they lower taxes and then lower just the direct ones and increase the rest to pay the bills.
Maybe your domestic rate rises under Labour were sufficient for the lot who replaced them to fund a gradually reducing service with. That way the "old lot" can be put in a bad light whist the "new lot" grab the praise. Did the "new lot" actually lower the rate significantly ? Do you still get your street lights on through the night and a weekly rubbish collection like the past generations had ?
No good having fewer day's worth of work to pay one's taxes if one ends up paying personally for things that used to be provided on the rates. (Just had some organisation put water meters in down our road; time was I was part of a civilized society that knew water was vital and we all had to have whatever we needed to stay clean and hydrated; and so funded it by the community for the community: but obviously it is heading towards a "sort yourself out, society doesn't care" arrangement.

Icthie - I am not sure if you superior knowledge of Ukraine shows you were not brought or perhaps you missed the relevant History lessons
since at least the sixties, the message of television was thought to be so strong that it was enacted that they must give a balanced view
( notwithstanding the then strong socialist bias of the beeb -TW3 was in full swing ridiculing the Tory government and " Crazy Dick " Crossman was heard without opposition to say " O when we are in power we would never allow that " )
whereas it has always been known that the newspapers have a particular axe to grind when one buys one. Fr'instance one doesnt buy the Daily Mail ( AOG doesnt ) and THEN complain that they have given Mili a fair crack of the whip

Having had to sort the fall out from a neighbours ( natural ) death,
It is much more " sort yourself out - those that are paid to do so are gonna say it is none of their business "
and ... " yes by the way if you are thinking the govt services dont give a toss then you are absolutely correct "
In particular the 'useless' GP refused to turn out
and I was stuck with an absolutely gormless secretary who wasnt gonna get her bottom out of the chair she was sitting in even if there was a nuclear explosion,
who clearly had the idea that if he was dead why was I ringing
( I know the rules I said )
The ambulance ( who turned up, called by some helpful clerk in a ministry ) said we dont do dead bodies which I kinda knew anyway.
and so it has to be a coroners case with all the attending delay
even tho we know why he died ( he wore out )
Oh and the police service officer ( police too valuable to come to the phone ) wanted to know why we knew he was dead ( rigor mortis, body cold )

I recall Gordon Brown's government putting up National Insurance from ten percent to eleven percent, and Brown saying "What's the fuss about, it's only a one percent rise ?" It wasn't, of course; it was a ten-per-cent rise. And he fooled almost everyone. How many more labour candidates/MPs are innumerate ? No wonder they left the economy in tatters when at last they were defeated.
