Last week Fender posted a news story link regarding the abhorrent slaughter of animals in a Halal slaughterhouse.

Whilst the vast majority of us agreed that it was indeed terrible what the link showed, some of us tried to argue the fact that the cruelty involved had nothing to do with the fact that the perpetrators appeared to be muslim and that it does indeed happen in 'our own' abattoirs.

I have read the articles and seen the still photos, won't watch the video.

I totally condemn any unnecessary cruelty to get our food to our plate - even as a meat lover, I often feel a slight shame at what may have gone on.

I care not what any abattoir worker's persuasion is,wholesale cruelty is exactly that.

Gotta admit Naomi, neither could I, nor the one from Fenders link. The description was enough to bring tears to my eyes.

To be honest I just wanted to know whether there'd be the same outcry as their was in the previous thread seeing as the perps in this one appeared to be 'our own'.

I will repeat what I said last time.

Anyone who is an animal lover and thinks the stun method is a humane way to kill is an hypocrite. You are comparing two methods of slaughter and judging one is less terrible than the other. But they are both terrible.

If it is so much better, why do they not have guided tours or school trips to see the process and let us decide. Instead we just see clandestine filming that people won't watch.

Of course, the very act of slaughter is inhumane - we know that.

It is the addition of an extra layer of cruelty for no reason such as kicking,punching and torturing that is abhorrent.

I've been on school trips to a 'stunning' slaughterhouse.

Not a fun outing, but one that I think everyone should do - or else live a vegetarian life.

The one I went to was well run, as humane as possible and completely open to unannouced inspection.

I will utterly condemn any slaughterhouse that has degrading practices - but I do happen to think that that includes all Halal slaughterers by definition.

I've been in a slaughter house and the cruelty is unbelievable. That is why I'm now a vegetarian. The treatment of the animals is nothing short of barbaric. Some of the staff find it all quite funny !

My school went on a day-trip to the local abattoir when I was in third year high school. Many of us just never bothered turning up for school that day.

I haven't seen any threads about this BOO and I won't watch the video footage. I can say that without a doubt I don't care who is doling out the mistreatment they should be sacked, but I care very much that the animals aren't being stunned before slaughter. In an ordinary abbatoir they are stunned which is more humane. I am very disturbed by the fact that I may be eating Halal meat because I object to their inhumane methods of killing, (what good is a prayer when you a bleeding to death)? By the same token a Muslim would be upset if they found that they are eating 'our' meat. It's time to be open about what we buy.

To me it doesn't matter who's doing the killing - treating the animals with kindness and dignity at the end should be a given, not an option.

My husband used to have to attend work one day per week in an abbatoir when he worked at a butchers shop. He says sheep are the most skittish they jump all over the place, whereas pigs and beasts are more or less docile before given the bolt.

as far as animal rights protesters go, the outcry is going to be the same and is for the same reason.

The overall volume of the outcry might, however, be somewhat less because it does not fit the 'Muslims do baaaaaad things' agenda of the type of people who leapt onto the previous story with glee, last time.

I think that is the point you are trying to make.

Meanwhile, there are memes circulating on Twitter where it is cats and dogs being slaughtered for meat and leather in China and the far east. If you buy soft leather goods from that part of the world, it's probably pooch, not sheep/goat/cow.

There is cruelty to animals worldwide but do we prioritise activism in order of how distressing we find each problem area or do we fix what is on our own doorstep first and work on persuading the far east to follow our lead later?

Was that an attempt at vegetarian radicalisation?

Or is it the case that some kids, these days, are simply not making the connection between what goes on their dinner plate and the creatures they see in the countryside? (For some city kids, countryside may be a thing they only ever see on TV, anyway).
