Roll up, roll up - it's cake time my fellow AnswerBankers.

Are we looking forward to people anxiously peering into hot ovens, the existential crisis of "is it ready yet?" nearly breaking them down entirely?

Of course we are!

Are we looking forward to the signature challenge, a swiss roll, going completely wrong and producing something ultimately sad but endearing to their character?

You bet!

So then, now is the time to prime your kettle for a nice cup of tea as we launch ourselves once more into the cakey cakey goodness of the Great British Bake Off.

This thread is for episode one, dedicated to "Cake". We've got a Swiss roll, a undisclosed "British classic" and a Classic Cherry cake to all go wonderfully wrong before our eyes.

This thread is designed for discussion of Episode 1 of the Great British Bake Off. I expect us to quickly form camps supporting one baker or another and discussing the pros and cons of their individual techniques.

That, and how nice the cakes look. Don't you fancy a cake now?

Here's the bakers for this series: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/4fB8YW68M3BX4LVd9XkRGxv/bakers

NOTICE TO GRUMPY PEOPLE: If you are posting here to complain about the Great British Bake Off being on again, how "boring" you find it, or to ask "what's the point" you will be suspended. This is fair warning. To be absolutely clear: we don't care what you think about GBBO :)

So, for the rest of us, let us be prepared at 8pm for what will surely be one of the finest moments in cake this year...

I`ve never watched it but I read in the paper that they are going to be using powdered raspberry and strawberry. It would be interesting to see what they do with those (I think they have previously been used in chocolate making). i expect the supermarkets are stocking up.

237SJ - I think you're probably right. It's a bit like when Jamie decides to use a bit of prok belly instead of loin - can't find it for love or money for the next week :)

It's going to be a good one this year. I'd like to set out my stall as #TeamMartha from the start.
I'm going to watch it with 6 year old thing 2, think he will enjoy it more than My Kitchen Rules (he cried when his favourites didn't win).
Perhaps you should inaugurate a GBBO badge?
Never miss this programme, love it. I love all the cookery programmes that's on though.... :-)
i just wonder how they can make it fresh this year?
I only hope now it's gone to BBC one they don't dumb it down for the masses and we end up with big brother stylee contestants! However, we wait with bated breath for tonight :)

Check the eggs, sniff the milk first? :)
I love the show, but will have to catch up on bbc iplayer as I will be working tonight.
Did I read somewhere that there will be a programme on BBC 2 the next night with the contestant that was voted off? Bit like Strictly, with their 'It takes two'....
Can't wait!
Looking forward to it.
I can't wait either, since Masterchef finished I've only had the Commonwealth games to watch and that was exhausting. I look forward to drooling over baked delights every Wednesday for the next few weeks.
knowabit: the spin-off prog. "The GBBO...an extra slice" is on Friday each week at 9pm - hosted by.....wait for it.......Jo Brand.
Yep, thoroughly enjoyable programme, love mel and sue in it too with their little quips.
I had no idea about a spin off programme, must have a look at it, thanks for the info.
Wheat and chaff are already showing themselves....
I'm watching, l love it! I think there could be some tears in the rolling process....
I fancy Nancy to be there at the finish.
Can't watch it until tomorrow, thing 2 decided to play minecraft instead :(
