Question Author
night naomi try not to think of any rats and if you do hear any scratching just pull the covers up and ignore chuck they will only be after a bit of nosh
and they'll be queueing eleven-deep for it... but don't worry, that's not really a queue
Naomi, we have two species of rat in this country, black rat (rattus rattus) and the brown rat and the brown rat (rattus norvegicus) the most common everyday rat is the larger of the two, the brown rat. No such species in this country as sewer rat or water rat.

On doing many courses on rats with DEFRA, the subject of giant rats often came up, DEFRA also deny their existence.

If a giant rest has been found it is a species that has been released or escaped. There are bigger rats in other countries.

Question Author

Thanks Ratter. I presume as children in London we called them sewer rats because they came up from the sewers. Those I see in the fields always look a lot smaller though - but maybe that's because I'm bigger now - if that makes sense. ;o)
Naomi, I'm sure that is the reason, a bit like wagon wheels, they seem smaller as we get older but apparently the same size as always.

Point of interest: the fancy rat some have as pets is also known as the Brown Rat (rattus norvegicus) it has been bred to produce different colours and hopefully to rid it of some of the many diseases they carry in the wild.
No problem - fine dining is the answer - we can learn from our French friends -
