Strikes start today, Crow is on a beach in Rio on a 10K holiday. Now, as Boris says, he is entitled to his holiday but does it really send the right message?

i wonder if Milliband approves of this, must gain him some votes from Middle England; not.

Crow is on a beach in Rio

Give the propaganda a rest. He isn't in Rio. He's in London, doing his job.
You could afford a holiday in Rio as well if you got a six figure salary as champion of the working man and lived in a council house.

Strikes by transport workers are a form of terrorist action. The public don't want to pay higher fares or higher taxes. Members of transport unions are basically saying - give us what we want or you'll have to walk. We should sack those who strike and imprison those who encourage strikes. I'm sure we can find plenty of people who would happily do their jobs.

So jno, the independent peddles propaganda too then ?
Boris Johnson thinks union ballots should be valid only if 50% of the eligible members vote for the action proposed.
Fine...only I think precisely the same rules ought to apply to London's mayoral elections! Were it so, he wouldn't be in his current position.
The only 'weapon' the workers of this world have is the threat of withdrawing their labour.
Workers striking is holding the country to ransom

City bigwigs threatening to leave the country if they don't get >200% bonuses isn't

As a certain poster on here would say

right -ho
the Independent hasn't given lies as facts, you did.
Jake, I totally agree. By the way, regarding the apparent "threat" that bankers etc would leave the UK if they didn't have their demands met (according to the media) is a long-standing one. Has there ever been even a shred of evidence that this was a likely outcome or a known case of anyone in such a position actually leaving for Zurich or wherever? Why don't we call their bluff?
For the life of me I cannot see the "mileage" in this story.

The Unions have been holding the country to ransom for as long as i can remember and that is about 50+ years. At least the Union bosses no longer say "It is not the poor that we want to inconvenience."

Good old Bob Crow..........that is what you are paid to do....get the best deal for your members and you do it well.
The miners used to hold the country to ransom. It's a strategy that worked out well for them.
ludwig.....LOL.....yes, it did, but they picked the wrong leader....;-)
us Anglo Saxons - us are odd

This again is the politics of envy - X is on holiday somewhere nice - sun drugs and scorpions etc - and someone says - he shouldnt be there, he should be digging wells in Zummerzet !
and the chorus choruses - yeah !

and someone else says - pensioners shouldnt have the pension they've paid for - I dont have a job !
and someone else - wqithout a job probably choruses - yeah pay them nothing !
ludwig //The miners used to hold the country to ransom. It's a strategy that worked out well for them. //

Yes it did they priced themselves out of the world market and were then able to enjoy a life of leisure on benefits.
The Russian were particularly happy, they supported the NUM financially to stay on strike , after Scargill begged the Kremlin for aid. This suited the Russians very well as their labour costs were far lower than ours. They and Poland then and since continue to supply us . In fact the reported 90 million tons stockpiled during the strike came from them.

A similar story to much of our industry which is now based abroad. We go on strike and foreigners reap the rewards.
city bigwigs don't run the underground, and those affected by these strikes are many. Boris has said that people won't be losing jobs, they will be deployed on the stations in other roles
is that the same Boris who said no ticket offices would be closed? And who now says... something different? I wouldn't believe him as far as I could throw him.
When I was a young boy – I wanted be a train driver when I grew up, but it was not to be, after leaving school I went on to further education.

Had I followed my dream, I would be earning far more than I can now ever dream of earning.
If I was in a job that requires no formal qualifications with annual pay in excess of £45k – I would say that my union boss was worth every penny he is paid.
hymie the only train driver that i can find getting over 45k is the eurostar driver do you have an up to date list of the pay scales
I tend to agree with Hymie. Why shouldn`t train drivers earn a good wage for a good day`s work? If it takes a union to get them that wage then so be it. I have a friend who is in aviation insurance who takes home £11,000 for a job which is just Sales and Sales is about the gift of the gab - nothing more. Those kind of jobs and salaries don`t make the news though.
BTW - the £11,000 is per month.
business leaders have warned that the strike will cost £200 million.

So, though this may not be the conclusion they wanted from their figures, it tells us how much tube drivers are worth: £100 million a day to the economy.

On that basis, theyre clearly very important people indeed and worth every penny they get.
