in view of the likelihood of unrest, should the Home Secretary not have stepped in and banned Mark Duggan's virgil set to take place today outside Tottenham police station?

You can't ban what isn't illegal.
'' the likelihood of unrest '' maybe the vigil will be peaceful ?
Virgil - as in 'I see rivers of blood foaming... ' ?

Sorry A, the rivers of blood speech was meant to come from a poet named Virgil. Aeneid I think

Um Vigil - No I dont actually - is there a likelihood of unrest /
The family have appealed for calm - and said enough is enough.

.... they want todays events to be peaceful (news just now)

Anyway if Bernard H _ H goes on tel and says I am fearful of violence as a result of numerous police reports of crowds gathering

all we will think is: he's lying.....

mark duggan like all kids/young men know that if your approached by the police and they are obliviously serious about it, in or out your car hold your empty hands in the air, if this guy had have done that there would be no story to tell
If people want to stage Mark Duggan's version of the Aeneid in a contemporary setting then I think that's a positive thing.

But Peter has in any case got in before me I see
The police had yo apologise to the family for yhe appaling way they were treated after the killing. The police took 6 weeks to contact his mother. The family called for restraint after the inquest verdict, and the Prime Minister praised them for that.

// Mark Duggan's family plans to hold a candlelit vigil for him this weekend.

The Reverend Nims Obunge, a pastor in Tottenham who knows the family, said: "It is a vigil in remembrance and respecting the life or the death of Mark Duggan.

"His family, his children, will be there and we don't expect anybody to come to create unrest or anarchy." //

So No, the Home Secretary should not seek to bank the vigil. In these tense times, banning a vigil would probably cause more anger than letting it go ahead.
I doubt the vigil could be banned, but it’s a pity a few brains don’t step in. People holding a vigil for a criminal in possession of an illegal firearm as though he was some sort of saint to be revered. He wasn’t. He chose his lifestyle. I have no sympathy whatsoever.
whatever you think of his lifestyle. he still has relatives/family/friends who are grieving for him. his crimes ( whatever they were ) are his not theirs crime.
I agree with Anne, just because he was a criminal doesn't mean he wasn't loved.
I didn't say he wasn't loved by his family - but he certainly wasn't the innocent victim they seem to be making him out to be.

I think you will find that they can.

If it is not meant to be provoking why is the vigil to be carried out outside a police station, why not near the spot where he was shot, and why now it is not an anniversary or anything?

Virgil,
Wasn't he one of the Tracy Family in a popular TV show a while back?
I have to agree with AOG in that the choice of venue is rather suspect.

I apologise to all members of the AnswerBank Spell Checking Association for my careless misspelling of the word 'VIGIL'.

I am now standing in the corner with my dunce's cap securely sitting upon my head.
Why are his supporters turning it into a race issue?

Come on out Aog,
there's no shame in not knowing the difference.
Like Badlric, I too wondered if there was to be a new Thunderbird, number 6?
Baldric, even.....

He might be the Poet in the family Chill.
