It's not American - it's Irish

Went over to the US from Ireland and got imported here from there

Always been a big deal over the somewhat smaller pond

My daughter loves Halloween and puts a lot of effort into putting on a display all the children in the village appreciate.................don't be so bah humbug Tora.
I hate Halloween myself but good on him for raising money like that.

I'm not, I save the bah humbug for Xmas!

We need to reinvigorate Guy Fawkes' Night.

You don't see kids doing 'penny for the guy' much nowadays...and when you do they don't put much effort into making the Guy (normally a teddy bear in someone's nightie sat in a pushchair).

So I agree with you - Halloween can go get lost.
Halloween has been a big deal in Scotland for decades, am I right in thinking that in England it's more recently that it has become an event?

I love it. Making neepy lanterns (none of this pumpkin guff), dressing up, dooking for apples and telling rubbish jokes - great fun!
When I was a nipper in the scouts and cubs we did apple bobbing, pumpkin carving, swinging apples, mummy dressing and told horror stories round the camp fire. Great fun.
All the kids went trick and treating, too - usually reusing the mask for 'penny for a guy'
We did that too, hc!

I remember Guy Fawkes would have a Frankenstein's monster face every year.
'mummy dressing'?

Huh???
2sp you forgot the black treacle buns

We did loads for Halloween as a kid - neeps hollowed out and with 4 of us that mean we ate a load of neep that week!!
FGT, it was the carving of the bloomin' neeps that nearly killed me.

And then the smell when you lit the candle and put the wee neepy lid back on (with chimney cut to let the smoke out)...

We are having a little party (himself is sorting it all out) - this afternoon it looked like Hobbycraft had exploded in my kitchen. He's even made frozen hands to go in the punch, rats to decorate the stairs and some gravestones. The kids will have a fab time.
2sp - they are a lot scarier than pumpkins but I can't seem to get large ones anymore they are all little bloody things!!
I wouldn't mind if people kept this stupid business to themselves, but they come knocking on my door!
I might be confused but WHY was TTT a saucepan?

I think it's very jolly. We will be in the town tomorrow, in our black numbers, supporting the local licensed trade.
