I am very interested in how Daniel's mother could possibly have done the things she did to her own small child. The bond between Mother and child is very strong, as can be seen from nature. Is there anybody here on AB that has the necessary skill or experience to explain this phenomenon ?

I can just about see that neglect may come about from abuse of alcohol and drugs. But this horrible woman went out of her way to inflict pain and torture on her own flesh and blood. I just can't get my head around it.

I honestly can't either. Drugs and maybe some mental health problem-although that's a guess.
It's a sad and sorry state of affairs that some people get satisfaction from being cruel, especially to the defenceless.
"The bond between Mother and child is very strong, as can be seen from nature"

Not strictly true. Animals are often rejected by their mothers.
Well according to this womand mother in Poland her daughter was perfection and its all the fault of UK social services; so watch out for the compo claim!
I cannot think of a single reason/excuse why anybody would do this to any child and for a mother to do this to her own child is just mind numbing. I do however think that in many cases (and before anybody jumps down my throat NOT ALL cases) a step-father is on the scene somewhere.

Although not a parent, if I remember correctly, Hindley claimed to have "fallen under sadistic Bradeys spell" so perhaps there was some kind of undue influence from him. Not that that excuses her one iota but there are many, many women who put their boyfriends/partners before their children. You only have to watch JK to see this in action over and over again.
I can't explain it but it's not a unique situation sadly.

missnemesis, I think you're right. New lovers are often involved.

The same thing happens in the animal kingdom. When a new alpha male takes over (having run the old one out of town) the first thing he does is kill all the cubs in the pride.
Yes missnemesis it truly astonishes me when women put boyfriends over children. I rememebr this case of teh woman who drowned her kids in the car because the man she wanted didn't want kids.

Really difficult to comprehend in any way.

But jno...I have never seen evidence that mother lions do the killing. There may not be one answer to this horrible case but it seems extremely strange to me.
But in nature they do reject their offspring.

Although in nature they don't appear to be sadistic about it.
It isnt something I can comprehend, I hear a child crying and it tears at my heart. I just hope that their time in prison is made as bad as they made the life of Daniel, hopefully alot worse
Somehow it always seems much worse when things like this are committed by a female, let alone a mother.

Personally I think as well as imprisonment she should be sterilized.
Because in 30 + years she might have another baby?
No animal mother kills her own young, surely. Another male may kill her young because they are not his. The only instance I can recall of a female animal doing so, was a greyhound bitch who went mental at giving birth and killed the first pup before we rescued the next and she calmed down
Don't rodents sometimes eat their young?
I can't get my hear around it either. Animals behave like animals because they don't know any better.
There's an interesting article in today's paper, looking at Climbié, Baby P, and Daniel, and pointing out that the cruelty to all those children appears to have started when a new man came on the scene, not the child's father. if that man is known to have cruel tendencies, and resents the child, is that a motive? Not in my book (and I know many men who have taken on another man's child) but the parents in this case were devious manipulative and addicts.
mikey, I don't know that there's affection, in the human sense, between lions. But human mothers, out of attraction to their new lovers, are influenced to do terrible things - in effect, they love the new man more than they love their children. Not all of them, obviously, it's very rare; but the stepfather thing does seem common to a lot of cases.
What I find especially odd in this case is that Daniel wasn't the only child. Yet his sibling/s weren't maltreated - she and her partner only had it in for this particular child. Which I think makes the whole new stepdad on the scene scenario not as definitive.
some people are just evil.
