Answerbanker try googling for Chronic Pain Syndrome forums....for fibro I've found forums far more helpful than the health information ones that can, as you say, sound depressing and daunting. I haven't read anything on here yet but you might find it helpful http://chronicpainsite.com/mb/?gclid=CMn_5NaMw7gCFfLHtAodWwUAyA

We had a client who had chronic knee pain from Pagett's Disease. He was prescribed paracetamol and tramadol (maximum doses) and amytriptaline at night. He also wore knee supports. Unfortunately, nothing seemed very effective and he eventually had oramorph. He had an analgesic gel for his knees heatpad and some exercises, which he wouldn't do. Have you been prescribed anything yet?
ankerbanker - this is my friend's appointment last Friday

Went to GP on Friday - he said there is no fluid on knee - damage to knee is degenerative - ie osteoarthritis!!! He is arranging a scan of the knee and sending me to XXXXXXl for a specialist to see me which will be far easier than having to go to XXXXXX as before.

It causes inflammation of the joints - the skin is very hot at times and very sensitive. I have been having weekly physio, exercising in the gym, taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory tablets.
You may be able to get stronger painkillers if necessary, depending what you are on now. Does a cold compress help to ease it?
Sorry..can't help....never heard of the disorder until now.

I have searched and researched the internet and it seems that it is a disorder that is diagnosed by excluding all other disorders.

pixie.....if someone has Paget's Disease of bone, then that is the causes of their pain...........why one needs to put an extra name to it completely eludes me. Same as pain from osteo-arthritis, there is no need to give it an extra name.......just O.A.

Will watch this thread with interest.
I know of a few people with chronic pain, who were prescribed amytripteline *** spelling,
anneasquith - yes, I am one of them! It works by dulling the nerve endings slightly, but doesn't completely take away the pain.

I'd recommend trying to be referred to a pain management clinic. Don't expect to be pain free at the end of the course because chronic pain doesn't work like that. But they will help you find ways of coping, if you're willing to give it a go.
I'm considering amitryptiline for fibromyalgia but I found the pain management clinic no help at all. When the nurse said there was a drug I could take called 'amoxicillin' I knew it was time to leave. :)
Really sorry to hear that, Robinia. Seems to me that any kind of health treatment is always a bit of a lottery as to what kind of standard you receive. I was very lucky, and learnt a lot about pain control via breathing exercises, pacing activities, physical exercises, but also by sharing experiences with other patients. I hope you find something that heps you - fibromyalgia is very unpleasant. x
Thanks Kiki, I'd been managing for a long time before before I was sent there so I think I'd fathomed out what worked for me. It isn't always the pain, it's the overwhelming exhaustion that gets to me.

Answerbanker I hope you find something to help you too...I found getting people to believe me was (and still is) a huge hurdle.

The nhs site has a lot if information but a lot of examples which are , quite honestly , very depressing . It would be nice to hear of people who have managed to control it , come to terms with it , or even get rid if it !
I suppose we are all individual and can't expect the same results or symptoms.
The pain clinic is the next step. Thankyou all for joining in - any help / advice is welcome.
And yes pixie - a cold compress helps but makes the skin painful

I have Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome in my blasted ankle following surgery over a year and a half ago. I have a tens machine, PreGabalin, Tramadol and Physio 3 times a week. I am just told it will take time. There is not much else they can do for me which is fabulous!
Sorry meant to add, I also attend the pain clinic who gave me the tens machine.
Sorry, my before post was a little confused as I referred to "me" but meant my friend. Regarding Amytriptline - took it for Fibromyalgia one night only and went to "talk" next morning and spoke in a very slurred manner - I threw the Ami down the toilet sink.
