This has really upset and worried me. I know they have to face terrible conditions in Afghanistan, etc., but surely there should have been more supervision and observation on a training exercise.

Of course we need to await the full details, but if the precautions put into place were so poor they could not prevent the collapse of three supposedly healthy men , lord help the troops out in real tropical climes.
It is not unknown for some soldiers to be particularly gung-ho and to not follow normal operating procedures. The three could have been working together as a unit and may have decided to take unnecessary risks. Until we know more facts it is difficult to make a reasoned judgement.
Surely they have to train in conditions similar to those they'll encounter in real life - otherwise how can they possibly prepare themselves? It's tragic, but we don't know enough about it yet.
Of course they have to train in similar conditions, but two deaths Boxtops is totally unacceptable. Training cannot completely simulate real conditions - why not use real ammunition if this is the case!?
