In the continuing quest for sex equality, why should it be only men who have to put their lives at risk?

/// Major Judith Webb said "women should not be given roles in infantry units where they would be expected to “close with and kill the enemy at close quarters”. ///

/// I don’t think we should have women in infantry roles. By opening it up to women, are women shooting themselves in the foot? Because they are not going to be able to have those standards,” she said. ///

/// She argued that it still shocked people when a woman soldier died in war zone. ///

/// “The British public still do not accept women should be in such roles. ///

they should be allowed to slug Taliban with their handbags
If a woman and a man share the same fitness standards and are prepared for what they might encounter then I think that they should have the same opportunities - same goes for any job in my opinion.

There should be an identical criteria for both sexes. If they don't meet it then they should not be enlisted. Simple, in my opinion.
What are the benchmarks for this?

It seems from this vague reference in wiki that not even the Israelis, who have a tradition of deploying women in combat, have totally embraced this idea other than in support roles:

/In 2000, the Equality amendment to the Military Service law stated that the right of women to serve in any role in the IDF is equal to the right of men.[24] Women have taken part in Israel’s military before and since the founding of the state in 1948.[25] Women started to enter combat support and light combat roles in a few areas, including the Artillery Corps, infantry units and armored divisions. A few platoons named Karakal were formed for men and women to serve together in light infantry. By 2000 Karakal became a full-fledged battalion. Many women would also join the Border Police./
From the IDF website:

/The Caracal Battalion was founded in the year 2000 conceding to public pressures for the
creation of an intensive combat unit for girls. They are given the name of a desert feline
whose gender is barely distinguishable, and the battalion number signifies the number of
women soldiers who fell in the Palmach Era.

The girls volunteer to become combat soldiers, and must go through two days of mental
examinations and physical challenges before joining, since the course is strenuous and
identical to that of any other exclusively male battalion.

As part of the Southern Command, Caracal men and women secure the Egyptian
border from smugglers, infiltrators, and terrorists./
yes
I don't see why they shouldn't.
I can't see why they wouldn't either. I also think that any woman who wants to would probably be good at her job and fit for her job. Quite honestly I don't think the vast majority of women would want to.
I meant 'shouldn't'
No, they shouldn't IMHO.
Chill Doubt. I respect your opinion, just interested to know why you think that a woman who fits the bill in all respects shouldn't be allowed in the infantry.
I thought it was the Geneva Convention keeping women out of direct armed combat?
Anyway, I don't think it should be compulsory, but those who want to should be allowed.
Yes, they should if, like Lottie says, they fit the criteria.
Because of the extreme circumstances generally faced by infantry soldiers, LL.
When it gets to its basest form, infantry warfare can include fixing bayonets, even baser to physical hands-on biting/grappling/strangling.

I was an infantry soldier prior to transfer to RMP and I could never in a million years envisage a female acting in such a manner as some had to on Mount Tumbledown etc.

Just my opinion of course.
It would be the last thing I wanted to do ummmm!!! But each to his own ;o)
Some would chilldoubt, I have no doubts ;o)
Just watch them on the streets of Aya Nappa or similar!!!
Ahhh RMP explains a lot then ;-)
How so FGT?
Same, Lottie.

I do think that not many women would fit the criteria. The ones that do, and if it's what they want, go for it...

There are not many women that can compete with men.
For that attitude towards women!!

I have grown up surrounded by RMP and they all have the superior attitude!
