This is the most horrific news story I have read all year. I would never have believed it possible in the UK

A tragic accident.

It is tragic, but the one about the bloke who murdered all three of his children in the Forest Of Dean recently is far worse IMO.

Thanks, MT

I agree the murdered children is tragic, but to suffocate in a car buried in sludge is the stuff of nightmares.
I agree hc but I don't think they would have known much about it, as in the report it said the roof of the car was flattened, so I hope they didn't suffer for days.
much like those who died in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
It's horrible, but, like Ann, I doubt if they suffered for very long in a car that was crushed. I agree with Answerprancer. It is the stuff of nighmares, but to me no worse then many other fatal accidents for the occupants of the car. It is probably worse for their friends and family than it was for them.

I do hope you're right, Ann
I find it worse the amount of people in the fens who miss the bends at night and end up upside down in the dykes in water and are found a couple of days later. It is not uncommon.
I hate to dwell on this but imagine (if you can) what those three kids must have gone through, who did he pick first to *STAB* to death in those woods? did the other two try to run away or did they try to stop him? did one or two of them have to watch as their brother/sister struggled and bled to death in front of them at the hands of their *FATHER* ?
Sorry but this is FAR FAR worse IMO. If I'm having trouble trying to erase this from my mind having read it in the news, I cannot imagine what the Mother must be going through.
...but yes, it must have been horrible.

4 young lads were drowned in a car upside down in a fen area road near me years ago
i cant and don't want to imagine what those poor lads suffered trapped upside down and in the dark,
horrible.
i might add these lads were all from the same village not far from the accident area, well thought of guys, not the boy racer type
agree horrific, but to put this into context, three little lives snuffed out, by a man who was their so called father, cannot get my head around that at all. They haven't had a chance to enjoy childhood, and grow up, if you get my meaning.
I don't think it is right to compare this to the murder of children by a supposedly loving parent. It's not like with like.
I think this is so shocking due to the fact that they were undiscovered for so long.
// A further assessment in the following days found that the structure of the tunnel entrance remained unstable, and the council decided to have “a few days of sitting back and having a look at what was going //
The authorities have no excuse for not clearing that mud and it just smacks of incompetence on their part.

I can only hope that their deaths were instantanious and not through suffocation or dehydration.
Deggers, awful re the 4 lads.

I cannot see that the council were to blame in any way in this incident. There was so sign of any accident at all, and I expect other places have been blocked as well by landslides. People are very quick to cast blame.

/// much like those who died in Pompeii and Herculaneum. ///

A much more recent and closer comparison could be drawn.

The Aberfan disaster Friday 21 October 1966, killing 116 children and 28 adults.
Why are you trying to blame the council.

The tunnel was unstable, 'elf and saftey laws would prevent them clearing it and anyway why would they suspect someone had been trapped?

It happened, it was an accident stop trying to find blame. This is why this country is going to the dogs because people have to have someone to blame (and then the compo). Just look at the tv full of compo ads, is that all this country is now?

Yes but all so called accidents can be blamed on something or somebody.

I wonder if you would take the same cavalier attitude if the victims had been close to you?

No methinks after you had got over the initial sorrow, you would then be jumping up and down blaming the cost cutting council or some other lackadaisical responsible person.
