It's been a full week since I dredged up some anti-Daily Mail diatribe...but honest, this one has to be seen to be believed.

Isn't it racist in itself, to illustrate a story about racism with this picture!!!

Is the Mail now accepting that the Union Flag has become synonymous with far right groups and racists???

Had a leftie hand-wringing rag published this picture, would there not be a furore?

what do they mean by right thinking people... as an aside why do you pull up these stories, doesn't the Guardian, Times, or whatever rag you read have this type of item. Quoting the mail isn't going to upset mail readers, where are you AOG...
also it seems that the online version is somewhat different from what is sold in the newsagents.
It's stereotyping, isn't it?
Wow a whole week!!
can you tell it's a skinhead, could be a soldier, someone at last night of the proms, anything.
Is it infact racist to continually drone on about Racism, have you checked your shoulders for chips lately?
There not chips Motley they are boulders.
can i have some vinegar to go with those, lol
Emergency life or death situation
You are in a boat and there is only room for one more person.
In the sea are two drowning people begging to be taken on board and saved.
One is white and the other black.
You have no choice in the matter except you must save one and only one
If you are white/black who do you grab out to and save ?

If it makes you tired all this Daily Mail Bashing, why do you persist?

Anyway it looks like a black fellow to me, in front of the Union Flag, and I can't see if he is a skin-head or not, but I have seen some black skin-heads.

Where does it say anywhere that you have to be white to be racist?

We are all instinctively territorial and tribeist, White, Black, Yellow or anything in between, so you could say that makes us all racist to a certain extent.
I used to be a skinhead/mod/smoothie and I still love the music. It was nothing to do with race or colour. Please read below...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinhead

"A skinhead is a member of a subculture that originated among working class youths in London, England in the 1960s and then soon spread to other parts of the United Kingdom, and later to other countries around the world. Named for their close-cropped or shaven heads, the first skinheads were greatly influenced by West Indian (specifically Jamaican) rude boys and British mods, in terms of fashion, music and lifestyle. Originally, the skinhead subculture was primarily based on those elements, not politics or race. Since then, however, attitudes toward race and politics have become factors by which some skinheads align themselves. The political spectrum within the skinhead scene ranges from the far right to the far left, although many skinheads are apolitical. Fashion-wise, skinheads range from a clean-cut 1960s mod-influenced style to less-strict punk- and hardcore-influenced styles."
I don't think anbody is accepting anything other than the fact that the far right, (and left) will hijack flags and emblems to suit their own causes. They always have and always will because symbolism is very potent.

Eh?

Please explain!

This post is about the hypocrasy of the right wing press, of which the Daily Mail is the leading exponent.

Brenden - excellent response!!! That made me smile.

Bazwillrun - I would grab the one with the biggest biceps, so as to have someone help me row to shore. Excellent thought-provoking question though.

AOG - you've scored a bit of an own goal there. You can't tell the race of the chap (or butch woman) in the photo. I didn't mention race in my question. I referred to the Union Flag. That's the core question...why does the writer of this piece identify our national with racism?

I'm actually really shocked that so many have misinterpreted this question.

Black marks all round (go on - I dare you).
I'm not a racist but I am a culturist, if there is such a word. I socialise with people who I am most comfortable with, which means those of my generation and shared experiences. I would rather spend the evening with my Jamaican friend than my white neighbour who has dogmatic political views . My Jamaican friend is religious , his son is a vicar , whereas I'm an atheist but we have similar attitudes to life and that is more important than race or colour.
In the lifeboat I would probably grab the strongest , colour would not even cross my mind. On the other hand if a child was involved I would save the child.
Question Author
I hope yours is the more common attitude modeller. I fear that a minority would not look past skin colour to determine their choice.

Still no sign of anyone answering my original question, now that they've had a chance to read it again.

Odd that.
Only the author of that piece could truly answer the question, unless the picture was added by a sub-editor, then he/she would have to answer the question.

I hate the way flags and emblems are hijacked and, having grown up in Northern Ireland, I know a little about it.
//I would grab the one with the biggest biceps, so as to have someone help me row to shore//

who then throws you out and helps his pal into the boat?
Very good - trust nobody and let them both drown.
