Gromit, synchronised swimming was not "played" by many countries before it became an Olympic sport. The only person interested was Esther Williams, the former swimmer and film star. But she had enough clout to get it introduced at the LA games.

Given the water shortage this year it would be more socially responsible to hold the contest in empty pools and rename it Synchronised Grinning.

It seems that the sports that are willing to pay for it or can bring in massive advertising budgets can get the nod these days. Folk will pay a fortune to watch the semiclad beach volleyballists both male and female....that's prime advertising!!

Yes, I agree cricket should be in...there are enough nations (inc the USA and France) that qualify and I really do doubt that beach vb and BMX should be ther; having sad that, there is that boarding tube sport thing that the Flying Tomato has won in the Winter Olympics that should be questioned too.

As to our nitpicker, is AB a written mode of communications or speech just translated.....given my frequent errors and other folks' I would argue the latter? However, I do agree that it is probably libel but, at least, s-shot has seen the error of the way!
