It's interesting that people call them 'extremists' when in reality they are actually following the laws and traditions laid down in their respective holy texts. I'm not saying that their actions and views are not extreme when they are compared with modern day morality however.

The word 'extremist' suggests someone who has taken an idea and twisted it out of all shape until it bears little or no resemblance to the original. With regards to the Christian and Islamic view of homosexuality, this simply isn't the case. It is quite clearly condemned in the Bible in Leviticus, Corinthians and Romans and in the Koran – 7:81, 7:80-84 and in various other passages. In both holy texts, homosexuality is punishable by death.

Maybe we should give them another name. Literalists perhaps?

This is the face of religious orthodoxy, of a fundamentalist interpretation of cultural values anchored in medieval times. Such religious belief imparts a blinkered, biased and tunnel vision of the world on the fervent believers.

So, the catholic church becomes defensive, willing to shield abusive priests from secular authority, fearing for the reputation of the church, and muslim fundamentalists are willing to sacrifice their lives if they can create a spectacle and kill infidels or unbelievers.

according to the bible marriage is for having children - so the pope will say gay marriage is wrong.
Most catholics practice birth control now and thats wrong according to the pope too.

I wish I could find that amusing, but I can't. Here we have people imposing their twisted philosophy on others, and calling for those who have committed no crime to be put to death - and we're expected to accept that and live and let live? I think not. If such views came from any sector of society other than religion, there would be universal condemnation - and rightly so.
