Siemens Plc and XL Trains – a consortium comprising of Siemens Project Ventures GmbH, Innisfree Ltd and 3i Infrastructure Plc - have been appointed preferred bidder to build, own, finance and maintain the new trains. Siemens is already one of the leading suppliers of trains on British railways and employs around 16,000 people in the UK. The contract will create up to 2,000 new UK jobs. This includes work being created at Siemens' factory in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, as well as in the rail industry supply chain. It also includes jobs at two maintenance depots for the new trains which, subject to planning permission, will be built at Three Bridges near Crawley and at Hornsey in the London Borough of Haringey. The Thameslink infrastructure works will employ an additional 3,000 people at the height of construction.

Derby as you know is in the North ABerrant & I think it should be left in Derby also the suppliers of the components up to 200 It has been stated.
The Germans are very efficient at the moment.
They have invested in manufacturing and cut labour costs over the last 10 years and are now booming. Look at the GDP growth figures.
Unlike the British Government they try not to throw away skilled workers in times of recession , but keep them employed and provide a subsidy. Thus when the economy picks up , they are already up and running.
Like the director of Bombardier said today.
They will make highly skilled workers redundant and then never be in a position to be able to bid for orders in the future , due to lack of skilled workers in place and ready to go.
Face facts folks this country is finished.
The main employers are now Tesco ...part time shelf stackers on minimum wage.
IT has gone to India and Thainland
Industry is finished
Banking and finance , well we bet the family silver on that didn't we :-)

Unless your going to live on benefits , need free health care or education (you have not paid into) ...then get out of dodge
Bombardier is Canadian, but employs people in the UK.

Siemens is German, but employs people in the UK.

As far as the UK is concerned, there would seem to be little difference between the two. Except, as anyone who has worked on our railways will tell you, Bombardier can't build decent trains!
Canadian engineering giant Bombardier is shedding 983 temporary staff and 446 permanent workers at its Derby factory.

At what point does 'temporary staff' and 'highly skilled workers' become interchangeable terms?

Sir R, Exactly, the German to build Quality & they are known for it, WHO WON THE WAR?
@Aberrant - When the director of Bombardier quoted "Highly Skilled Staff" on News 24 today , I did think are they ?
I was given the impression that the trains would be built in Germany ...
If that's not the case and the contract is moving from UK based company to another ...then what's all the fuss about ?
I think they would be better if built in Germany.
Don't forget we live in a country where we can't afford to give OAP's a decent pension and have increased the retirement age ...yet we can afford to spend £200k in NHS costs on someone who selects England to have her children for free on the health service.
Note to anyone in the world ...want free health care ...can you afford a cheap flight to England ? Problem sorted :-)
