Does Boris Johnson Remain The Best Leader To Head The Government And Fight The Next Election?
A letter in this morning's Telegraph:
'SIR – The parliamentary Conservative Party and its followers should be careful. A Conservative government has two main functions: to govern the country to the best of its ability, and to protect the country from the threat of socialism.
The noise from Labour, the Lib Dems and the SNP, coupled with hysteria from the BBC, ITV and Sky News, should awaken the Conservative Party to the perils of a witch-hunt of Boris Johnson.
Yes, his ability to control civil service “social” events in No 10 is unacceptable at best, but in 2024 he should still be a vote-winner, and I fail to see any other candidate who can protect the country from Jeremy Corbyn Mark 2.'

He was never the right person in the first place: he was the most attractive proposition for a small, mad period in 2019 during the Brexit chaos (did it need a conman to appear to do a deal with the EU over the border?), and now the party and the country is stuck with him.
I think it is now very unlikely he would lead the Conservatives into the next election, but who knows.
There certainly are plenty of alternatives in his own party, and also relevant is the fact he is no longer facing the hapless Corbyn at the dispatch box. Much as I am sure he wishes he was.

Downing Street lockdown parties damaging for Union, say Scots
A majority of Scots think the No 10 partygate debacle has damaged the Union, a poll has found.
Some 54 per cent of respondents said the lockdown-breaching parties had hurt it a little or a lot.
Meanwhile, 78 per cent of the Scottish public think that Boris Johnson should resign over the saga.
I wonder if JRM has reconsidered what he said about the leader of the Scottish Conservatives ?

The writer has missed one vital group from that list - his own MPs. There is discontent in the ranks. Backbench MPs are getting a lot of ear ache from their constituents, many of whom are in extremely marginal seats.
Given a choice between saving their jobs or ditching Johnson, a lot will happily throw Johnson under the bus without a second thought.

A staffer said a lot of emails to their MP contained “stories of personal hardship from new people, not the regulars”. In some areas, anger spilled over into vandalism, with the constituency office of Derbyshire MP Robert Largan daubed with the word “lies”, according to pictures on Sunday. Last week the office of Wellingborough MP Peter Bone was graffitied with the word “liar”.
Conservative associations across the country said members were growing increasingly frustrated and some were leaving the party in protest.
“If he doesn’t go soon we will lose all the local elections that are coming up, or very many of them, and do immense damage to the party,” said Ann Stribley, the chairman of Poole Conservative Association. “We have had a number of members saying they can’t continue to be members while Boris [Johnson] is there. It’s been very difficult. A small minority have resigned.”

I went through the rage and anger bit at first. Now I think that Boris should stay IF, and only if, he has truly been shocked into becoming serious, buckling down to the job and getting back to the policies on which he was elected - e.g. no-one said anything about bankrupting us with Green policies. He needs to get tough about N.I. protocol as well and sort it out.
I find it hard to think of anyone who could replace him and also it's his mess and he should clear it up.
Otherwise, I do wonder if Sir David Frost would be the only one with the experience and strength to pull everything back together. I know that the other potential contenders fill me with horror, especially Gove.
