yougov has done some polling among US voters on the capitol attack... some astonishing results

https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2021/01/06/US-capitol-trump-poll

"In fact, many Republicans (45%) actively support the actions of those at the Capitol, although as many expressed their opposition (43%). "

"Far fewer voters think President-elect Joe Biden is a great deal (17%) or somewhat (9%) to blame. That being said, Biden is the biggest culprit in the eyes of Republicans, at 52%, compared to 28% for Donald Trump and 26% for the Congressional Republicans who opposed certification of the election results. "

Why do so many republicans believe things that are obviously untrue?

Because they've spent the last four years being lied to by Trump, and the several years before that being misled* by other Republicans, Fox News etc.

*Understatement.
I suppose that if you subscribe to the theory that Biden stole the election from Trump it necessarily follows that he would get the blame for the consequences.

56% believe in the weird qanon cult as well

https://civiqs.com/reports/2020/9/2/report-americans-pessimistic-on-time-frame-for-coronavirus-recovery

"QAnon, a far-right conspiracy theory about “deep state elites” has extensive support among Republican voters. One in three Republicans (33%) believe that the QAnon theory is mostly true. Another 23% of Republicans say that some parts of the QAnon conspiracy are true. Only 13% of Republicans think that it is not true at all. In contrast, 72% of Democrats say the QAnon conspiracy theory is not true at all"

It's like some people have created their own little reality!
Indeed, although it takes some mental gymnastics to take the "Sleepy Joe" attack seriously, ie that Biden is mentally incapable of office, at the same time as thinking that he has orchestrated one of the most sophisticated frauds in history.

The consistent solution would be that Biden's "puppet masters" are "to blame" for everything, while Biden himself is the acceptable face of their games. In which case he's no more to blame than would a child be for their parents' crime. But I suppose we shouldn't apply logic to nonsense.
A dream come true for Vladimir Putin
I think a lot of it is hatred of “the other side” blinding them to the crimes of their people, politics being so tribal.
Here is my cousin on the subject:
“ OK democrats. Enough is enough.
You WON!!!
You have the House, Senate and the Whitehouse.
But that's not enough. You have to kick us when we are down by continuing to attack the President in his last TEN DAYS in office.
How can anyone HATE someone so much. STOP!!
President Elect Biden wants unity. Perhaps his party should lead by example. This will seal the division that this vendetta against conservatism has caused.
God help our country.”

Note the words “vendetta against conservatism”. I thing that’s very illuminating
And what was the number of people they spoke to, probably only a few thousand and they were probably Republicans.
One can only hope that the US can get through the next ten days without further incident. Things might calm down a bit after that with Biden's installation in the White House a fait accompli. I won't hold my breath, though.
52% of Republicans are certifiable.

It's that simple.
It is tribalism. To some extent, it exists in both camps. However, the Republican camp seems to have more people that will swallow any old fairy story that is put in front of them without evidence to back it up.

On unity ... the attack was not an attack against conservatism or liberalism, it was an attack against the United States of America. Those responsible for and involved in the attack need to be brought to justice using the mechanisms available, whether they were Republicans, Democrats or just plain anarchists. Those bringing the justice should be united in doing so.

Indeed that tribalism was a big reason why Trump was so popular... lots of people enjoyed the fact that he annoyed the left and did not care about anything else. Not so funny any more is it.
"Why do so many republicans believe things that are obviously untrue? " - well that's the US generally, this is a country that thinks wrestling is real and the moon landings were faked! The home of the tin hat brigade, I'm amazed that they don;t think that Biden/Trump are not simply competing aliens from the planet Zog.
//Why do so many republicans believe things that are obviously untrue?//

I don't know. It's becoming that conspiracy theory garbage is entering mainstream politics and actually affecting the way people and politicians think and behave. It used to be the case that it was to confined to the idiot fringes and didn't affect much.

People are choosing their own truth because there are so many versions of it nowadays that you can do that. I suppose people are choosing the one that makes them feel better. .e.g .no way we are the losers! the election - HAD to be rigged right!?
I wouldn't get too complacent, TTT. Prior to the last couple of months you seemed determined to take Trump seriously as a politician, rather than recognise him for the world's most influential Twitter troll he's always been.

This is the cost of placing political convenience over character and integrity -- in the true sense of the word, not the way it is often abused by some on this site. Having Trump in power suited many, who were therefore prepared and completely willing to overlook the myriad character defects that made the way he's behaved in the last couple of months, and the threat he's posed to the entire system of Government, utterly predictable.

Perhaps, also, it will serve as a useful warning to moderate our own language in future. Using such words as "traitor", etc., attached merely to those who are politically in disagreement with you, should be a thing of the past. The events of January 6th are a natural consequence of normalising that language. Having said that, Trump's acts are, objectively, borderline treasonous, but perhaps this also serves to expose just how crazy it was that the language was thrown about for the far lesser crime of political disagreement.
Looking back, I have come to the conclusion that compared with Trump, Nixon was a veritable saint.
A quarter of Americans believe in alien abductions.
Probably it goes back forever, examples being various gods of antiquity, flat earthers, Roswell, moon landings ... it must be somehow in human nature to believe any old tosh if it somehow fits with what that believer wants to be real.
JIM 11.23 , Spot on .
“ Looking back, I have come to the conclusion that compared with Trump, Nixon was a veritable saint.”

I certainly see Reagan and George W Bush in a different light after Trump!

Democrats should recognise the good in the Republican Party and vice versa. Last Wednesday should remind all who the real enemies have most recently been.
But even at the immediate cost of some more fisticuffs literal and metaphorical, Trump should, one way or the other, be pursued and isolated.
Even McConnell comes out of the events of the last week or so in a ... shall we say, less unfavourable, light. Although, to be sure, those who constantly bend the rules as far as possible, even if they don't wish to break them, don't deserve that much credit.
