It's one thing to be old, and not look it, as Trump doesn't.

He is vibrant, pushy, forceful, gobby, and in power.

It's another thing to be old and look it, as Biden does.

He is diffident, polite, quiet, polite, and unlikely to be in power.

If the Dems are serious about beating Trump, they need a bruiser to go against him, Mr Nice Guy will never cut it in a million years.

Indeed AH, any credible candidate will wait until next time. They may have had a better chance if they'd not spent the last 4 years trying to oust Trump rather than getting a serious candidate and their act together.

I am sure that behind the scenes, the Dems are writing this one off, and getting ready for the next round, and hopefully they'll have a sensible candidate to run.

Maybe Byden is just going through the motions and taking one for the team - it's a thought.
He ain't that polite, andy. Called one of his own supporters a 'dog faced pony soldier' or similar the other day.
I’d say Bloomberg is a more likely challenger
Bloomberg Has unlimited resources and is already using his vast wealth to bombard TV and the internet with adverts.
As an ex.Republican he could make in-roads into Trump’s core voters. But he might frighten off more progressive Democrat voters.
Buttiegieg would be to differ.

Everyone who doesn’t listen thinks he is the moderate radical. But he is just as radical as Sanders and Warren.

On policy they can’t beet Trump because all their policies take more in tax and give it to those not paid into the system.. something the Americans don’t like.

They are all for gun control and confiscation. Again Americans like their guns.

They are for uncontrolled immigration.

Voting right for illegal immigrants.

Thought police in some fashion or another.

Big government.

High taxes.

On the face of it they are anti law enforcement and have called to demolish ICE and other security departments.

The majority of Americans don’t like this at all and Trump would wipe the floor with any one of them. The majority of Americans don’t like corruption in the WH and Biden has his finger prints, if not all over the Ukraine scandal at least enough questions that he will have to answer to eventually that he is a dead duck.

Sanders if openly socialist/communist/Marxist and wouldn’t get too far in a Trump battle either.

Warren isn’t far behind Sanders on the radical stakes and has openly said she will use executive powers to override the house and senate to push her radical policies through.

With the Iowa caucus debacle even Dem voters are fed up and ask if they are capable of running the country.

I predict Trump, if he keeps this up, will win the presidency for a second term and the Republicans will retake the senate.
Sorry keep the senate and retake the house.
Bloomberg’s big advantage is he missed the Iowa caucuses.
It astonishes me that in a country supposedly as advanced as the US, a handful of states still use this quaint system.
I don’t see the point in worrying about frightening off progressive democrats.
What sort of progressive democrat is going to be frightened into either voting for Trump, or not voting at all :-)
The democrats best strategy may be simply just to make sure they get all the various likely groups out to vote and forget about trying to woo anyone else.
Trump's base support could ensure a further 4 years

Jeez.
Very odd that Donny hangs around with such oddballs.
Birds of a feather
I would say useful rather than odd Gromit.
Trump's Right hand Man and his Left hand Man - Pence and Pompeo - are both born-again, evangelicals, albeit differing religious branches.
"Anywhere from 6 percent to 35 percent of the population is evangelical, depending on definition. The Pew Research Center 2014 survey in the United States identified the evangelical percentage of the population at 25.4 percent while Roman Catholics are 20.8 percent and mainline Protestants make up 14.7 percent."

- a large chunk of US electorate, add pro-Israel power and you may have a White House.

Other superstitions have been in play before

November is still a long way away, and it has to be remembered that at none of the elections in his term have Trump and the Republicans won a majority in the popular vote. That hasn't mattered, of course -- the Senate is deliberately designed to ignore the popular vote, the Electoral College broke in Trump's favour, and the House is the junior body in all this despite being the only remotely representative body of US majority voters' opinion -- but by some fine margins Trump won.

Democrats would be stupid to get cocky about winning, but the same applies to Trump fans. 2020 is way too hard to call.

I'm seriously *** off, though, that the Democrat race seems likely to be between Sanders and Bloomberg. Not that I was fussed about Biden, but there's something vaguely pathetic about, in particular, the idea of a race between two billionaires being regarded as in any sense a triumph of democracy. Also, a race between two people who should really be enjoying their retirement just looks awful.
jim360, do you still believe this democratic facade?

Here is a quote from another Quigley, male in this case, which unfortunately may summarize the democratic charade worldwide:

"The National parties and their presidential candidates, with the Eastern Establishment assiduously fostering the process behind the scenes, moved closer together and nearly met in the center with almost identical candidates and platforms, although the process was concealed as much as possible, by the revival of obsolescent or meaningless war cries and slogans (often going back to the Civil War). … The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can “throw the rascals out” at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy. … Either party in office becomes in time corrupt, tired, unenterprising, and vigorless. Then it should be possible to replace it, every four years if necessary, by the other party, which will be none of these things but will still pursue, with new vigor, approximately the same basic policies."
Bloomberg hasn't 'unlimited resources' Gromit, he is only "the 60 billion dollar man"..... the parking lot attendant who graduated thru the ethnic fold in time to take over from venal Giulliani as another Republican mayor just months after 9/11. But Bloomberg decided to leave the Republican Party and become an independent on June 19, 2007; he is now fill Democrat, back to where he was before 2001.
