There is a version of a song called 'girlfriend' which has recently been released but is a cover of on 80's track. Does anyone know who recorded the original??

I have a Kenny Thomas CD which has a track on it called Girlfriend. Don't know if it's the same song as the recently released version but has the following chorus; I would like to find someone who I can call, my girlfriend

Think it was Pebbles. Was she a protegee of Prince like Sheila E and Taja Seville, or am I confused?

Pebble recorded the original, the Beautiful South also covered it on one of their albums (Welcome To....???)

The original was done by Matthew Sweet and the album is called Girlfriend. If the lyrics are as follows, "I wanna love somebody, cos I need somebody to love", then that's your song.
