Are you not having a DJ?
Question Author
Nope, no dj. Using a pc and choosing our own music, but currently looking for some more inspiration!
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
I suppose you have to go with the normal run of the mill cheesy 70`s disco songs to get people up dancing

I`ve been to party where they did the pc thing and everyone was going up and putting their favourite songs on, it was quite amusing watching everyone sit down when The Smiths came on

That's the thing elvis, the music that i like isn't really dancing sort of music. If its just our choices i should imagine for the majority it will be a bit of a sit down-y affair!
In that case, best you play this then...

Indeed, we will!!
I don't think you can go wrong with ...'Celebration Day", "We Are Family" "Dancing Queen" etc. all the old favourites.
Wouldn't be a proper family wedding do without Hi! Ho! Silver Lining...(you can tell trendy young friends that you were being ironic). Anyway as if your Dad is gonna dance to Fergie....He would be expecting a Scots OAP breaking into some Man Utd ditties.
Are you sure you're not making a mistake not having a DJ? Unless you've got someone who is willing to 'man' the computer and who can act as a DJ, ie working out the mood of people, putting on songs which complement each other etc then it could be a disaster. Believe me, I've been to weddings where the couple have sorted out their own music and it has been awful. If you leave the computer open to people playing what they want you'll get all sorts of music coming on one after the other, instead of linking, you'll get loads of complaints that you haven't got peoples favourite song etc etc etc. To get the full effect you would also need to hire a sound system, otherwise what are you going to play the music through? The cost of hiring a sound system can be virtually the same as hiring a DJ.
I love "Happy Hour" by The House Martins and I love dancing to it !!! especially if you link it into another song and then it doesn't give people a chance to sit down !! but then you could link all the songs and you'll be dancing all night. Elvis might have suggested Scissor Sisters "Don't feel like dancin"
....By the way good luck on your wedding and Happy dancing!!

thanks all. spudqueen, definitely sure we don't want a dj. its isn't the cost involved more that we aren't massive fans of dj's at weddings. Unless we could afford someone world class of course! Already borrowing sound system so that should be fine. I know what you mean about dj's being able to read the mood and all that but there's a lot of us getting together to put together some play lists, so hopefully should be ok?!?! Bit worried now!!!
'Dance The Night Away' by The Mavericks - gets me up every time
Hi again kjmf, hope I haven't got you too worried! A few songs spring to mind - Mambo No 5, ABC - The Jackson 5, Twist and Shout - The Beatles, Can You Feel It - The Jacksons, Blockbuster - Sweet, Jeepster - T Rex, I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie, Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley, Modern Love - David Bowie. Don't forget some ambient music for during the buffet, (nice music, but not really dancing music) and some slowies for the end of the evening. Some people finish off with something like New York, New York by Sinatra or You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and The Pacemakers. Good luck, hope you have a wonderful day.
