Ah Thank-you Naz, it was Ry Cooder's version I was thinking of and I'd been wracking my brains for days trying to recall his name. I loved his version.
And thanks alot to everybody that answered, I hadn't realised there were quite so many versions.

lizzydrippin ... I saw him on TV recently (I think it was TOTP 2, or something similar), so as soon as I saw the words 'Vigilante & Man', I automatically thought of Ry Cooder ...
