Beethovens Moonlight Sonata
An Ending - by Brian Eno - when played with the NSPCC advert
The Lord's my Shepherd at my late dad's funeral. Not easy to sing when the tears are flowing :(
"Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" by Gavin Bryars
Albinoni's Adagio when used as a theme to the film 'Gallipoli'...
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings- featured in Platoon.
Try

Henryk Gorecki - Symphony of sorrowful songs
Richard Strauss - Im Abendrot
Richard D James - Selected ambient works Vol 2 track 24
Angelo Badalmenti - Laura Palmer's Theme
Due Tramonti and Fuori dalla Notte by Ludovico Einaudi
Have a go at Shubert's The Trout. Not quintessentially sad but the change of pace to mirror the catching a fish is pretty powerful. The music slows perfectly when it gives the impression that the fish loses his fight. I find something rather sad about that.
