Do guitars differ for a lead guitarist or rhythm guitarist. Or are they the same guitars just played differently?

They are the same models, played differently. Lead guitar plays a melody or solo, rhythm guitar, as the name suggests, strums chords to underline the rhythm of the song being played by the bass and drums. If the two band members have different guitars, it's personal preference, not their style of playing.
