I've been trawling the web for a while, and have found various useful resources. But can anybody tell me please, where might I look to find out details such as who WROTE the songs that we know and love? Is there a song database/databank somewhere that I'm not aware of?

Are there books that publish this information?

For UK Top Ten hits, try the Top Ten Hits database at http://www.**********.co.uk/TopTen/topten.htm

For songs that were registered for copyright in North America, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has an excellent database: http://www.ascap.com/ace/search.cfm?mode=search
The asterisked-out word in that URL is char-t-watch without the hyphens.

www.allmusic.com type in name of song and you will be given all the versions and who wrote them all.
