Of cotton wool to keep wrapping people up in?
I can remember back in the 50/60s when my family struggled to pay fuel /food / rent bills, it really is nothing new, but you had to stand on your own two feet. If you didn't have the money you went without, or paid when you could, little at a time.

It now seems that every little problem families have they go screaming for handouts. How long can this carry on, and should it carry on?
In my view its teaching people nothing, you won't help anyone by keep on propping them up.

In another 5 months or so you will find some complaining that their kids will have no Christmas presents. Will Sunak come up with a giveaway for that also. :)

The gov take lots of money off me when times are good.. it’s a good feeling to know they are willing to give some back when times are not so good.
for once I agree sandra. The government should not be borrowing to hand out cash we should all live according to our means and it certainly should not be stealing money from the energy companies.
I'm grateful for what the government will be giving me...and others like me. At least I may not freeze next winter.

Pasta. The market is flooded with cheap very warm clothing. I remember my bedroom being freezing with ice on the windows.

My bed covers came in the form of old army coats, one at the top of the bed and one at the bottom to keep my feet warmish.

This country needs to get a grip, people have become weak in all respects.
Both my husband and I work but heating oil is very expensive - earlier this year it jumped from £400 for 500 litres to over £2000 we had luckily bought oil just before this happened.
However, we would not have been able to purchase anymore at that cost and it means that we would have had no heating.
We are young and fit but our neighbours are not.
Who made them weak?
There parents and grandparents!

Sandra...I'll be 75 by winter. I'm quite capable of bundling up in warm clothing. But should I?

Aye we should go back to the Stone Age…. When men were real hunters and women were… well.. even hairier

Redhelen. Like I said in my OP, what you can't afford we did without. It don't seem to work that way anymore. Thats why we have become weak. Not being allowed to stand on our own two feet. The cotton wool comes out at the first sign of trouble or hardship. Getting through on your own makes one a better person.

steg, that's just a silly remark.
OK
Any idea if there's a bucket available short-term from the government?
I'm going to be sick.

Well if my comments are really making you sick douglas then may be I've hit a weak spot you have.

If you want some inspiration on how to get through this terrible time that some "think" we are having, take a look at the oldies in Ukraine, some of them in their 80/90s rapped up in old coats in front of an outside fire determined not to give way.
In fact I'm very impressed!!! some of them even trying to re-instate some kind of roof on their wrecked property in the middle of a bomb site
Isn't it a sad state of affairs when some are wanting folk to struggle and suffer their way through life to teach them a lesson. That's a bitter thing to be wishing on others.
We should be trying to make the world a fairer and kinder place.

As for Steg's post at 12.34! Have you seen the cost of hair remover these days?! ;-)
Oh I know where the weak spot is all right.
Maybe I need to move to the Ukraine. I need to toughen up.
I’ve never either expected or got from the government, yes I have bus pass and yes we get a winter fuel payment, I’m more than happy for both but that’s everything, to a point I agree with you Sandra
Gness - use a fine grade sand paper - will get rid of the dead skin at the same time - double saving!
Actually, comparing us to the suffering in the Ukraine is unfair and avoids dealing with the reality of those here who are finding life increasingly difficult. The young have more options but even they can cut back only so much.
