Randomly put this on and wow! The size of the crowds, the obvious atmosphere, the energy, and as for his voice!! Just incredible. And Brian Mays guitar playing!! They do NOT make concerts like that anymore! Such an incredible talent. Such a waste.

I saw Queen supporting Mott The Hoople in 1974, they played for about twenty minutes and Freddie split his trousers.
I blush to remember, given my subsequent career as a freelance music writer, but I loftily advised my friends that this would be the last we would see of them.
Fast forward to 1978 - Stafford Bingley Hall, and Freddie has a crowd of eight thousand plus hanging on his every word.
I think the were, and remain, one of the greatest bands in the world ever.

Stuart Maconie, a writer and broadcaster whom I admire and envy in seriously deep equal measure for his talents on both areas parts company with me on the subject of Queen, a band he admits he has never liked.
Similarly, Blur, a band he admires enough to have written their biography, is a band I find it impossible to relate to on any level.

I'm another who is no great fan of their music, but a huge fan of their musicianship. Brian May and John Deacon are both absolute masters of their trade, and Freddie the ultimate showman.
On the subject of Stuart Maconie. I've a lot of time for the man, as he introduced me to what is one of my all time favourite records, by way of his 6Music show, that being John Cale's Paris 1919.

I think that's an inacuracy put forward by the Mercury biopic - in reality Queen had not long returned from a massive US tour, and were perfectly match fit.

Queen did not split up. Their popularity had waned somewhat because of the Sun City tour and their last 2 songs prior to Live Aid, Hammer To Fall and Thank God It's Christmas hadn't made the top ten. Add to that Freddie's solo performances and the rumours of a split were rife.
Their Live Aid performance put them firmly back on the map and they went on to become one of the best recording and touring bands in the world. Amen.
