I think The Beatles could almost have a section of their own.

When I'm 64
Here Comes The Sun
Dear Prudence
Across The Universe
Blackbird
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
She's Leaving Home
Helter Skelter
//Days of Pearly Spencer charted //
That was the Marc Almond version.
Only the Marc Almond cover charted over here Roy.
McWilliams original release was not a chart success in UK.

But the song was (not a great success but a success) and that is what the OP is about.
Roy, you seem determined to pull everything apart on this thread. I have no idea what your problem is, but I can't be bothered to deal with it.
I was simply responding to your last comment, I love the song and play it regularly.
Back in the day we'd call these songs "turntable hits", but I suppose now only the vinyl revivalists know what a turntable is.
Because most of the songs listed are not 'anthem's they are just songs.
The whole premise of the thread is flawed.

You can calm down now Mozz...I'm of to the pub.

Harry Chapin ranks with the very best singer song writers and Cats in the Cradle, WOLD and Corey`s coming are a delight.
Mozz, last night Tony played one of my favourites which did top the charts but this splendid version didn't (over here)

//I'm of to the pub//

Thank heavens for that.
CaC, I love storytelling singer-songwriters, so Harry Chapin is right up there for me. Taxi/Sequel are 10 minutes of absolute beauty in my book.

Mamya, I didn't even know Sugar Sugar (The Archies version) was even a cover!
I may have worded that badly, Wilson's version is the cover.
That would.explain it then ;-D
Mozz, the list excludes album tracks that weren't released as singles. It's strickly singles that "everybody" (but me) knows but have never made the charts even if rereleased.
So flop singles basically? For me, that's different from an anthem, but I see your point.
well, not my point, the only anthem I know is God Save the Queen (and that made #2, allegedly) , but the compilers say that's what they were listing.
Jno, yeah, I reread the article, and they mention Led.Zep and Pink Floyd. My apologies.

And I think the Pistols being robbed by Rod Stewart is just about accepted by all nowadays.
The point of the article is songs that a lot of folk think MUST have been hits but the original artists hadn't released them as singles or they didn't enter the UK Charts.
I'd never heard of Helen Reddy before, Pasta. When I saw your post I got her mixed up with a singer called Helen Terry.

I think a lot of films and tv programmes use songs and music that have either not been heard of or have had little air play and they become popular. I'd never heard of Tiny Dancer before it was in a film.
