This has bothered me for years. I heard it a few times on Capital Radio and never managed to clock who it was by. It had a sort of stop-start rhythm, sung by a female singer, with slide guitars in the background.

This is the nearest approximation that I can make from memory...

Roughly how long ago did you hear it?
I'm sure you'd have known if it was a Madonna song but that's what your description made me think of immediately 'Don't Tell Me'
Good call, Prudie

I think it was around 1997? It's definitely not the Madonna one - the link that I put is a fair facsimile of the melody.
Sheryl Crow- All I wanna do? That was 2004 ish though.
Is it this?

If you don't get an answer here, and you herar it again, remember that you've got several hours to check back on which songs have recently been played on Capital FM:
https://www.capitalfm.com/radio/last-played-songs/

A few artists worth checking to see if it's them:
Lady Antebellum (or Lady A now)
Miranda Lambert
The Band Perry
Dixie Chicks
Carrie Underwood

Thanks for all of the input, but none of these suggestions are right. I did wonder about Sheryl Crowe, but I couldn't find a single release from that time that matched.

Like I said - the melody as I can remember is in the link.
Lady Antebellum was much later. I notice the Dixie Chicks have dropped the Dixie because of the link to slavery.
Meredith Brooks- btch?
Although it's late eighties, the Soundcloud clip reminded me of this:
Dido white flags ?

Found it! Thanks to the magic of Reddit, I now know that it's called 'I Know' by Dionne Farris:
