I think they can, it's just that some won't.
Because it is a load of Balls!
Awful song.

Save her from what?
they can and do, ever been to twickers?
It's because everyone knows the Lyrics are out of date. That bit about "rebellious Scots to crush", for example. No longer relevant today. I mean, when was the last time the Scottish people tried to rebel against the UK?

Yesterday?
1745?
I've seen and heard many sing it in my lifetime and certainly lots in the past couple of weeks - some people may have their reasons not to but that's their choice.
2014. Referendum.
Apart from then, Jackdaw :P
that's my favourite bit jim. Anyway joe congrats you've given the anti British something to get their rocks off with.

Jim is out of date. Only the first two verses are sung today, and the second verse very rarely at that.
It's the same with the Welsh anthem. Although many will know the words to the first verse of 'Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau', very few will know the second and third verses as they are very rarely sung.
Which words are the simple ones ?

Maybe folk don't wish to be made to feel obliged to do so.
the only decent version of what was a German hymn is the one sung at the Last Night of the Proms, setting by Britten I think....

If they played it like this everyone would sing it.

It was meant to be satirical in the first place, but never mind.

I prefer to sing the Scottish national anthem, but that's a personal choice.
