Hi, Having been a lifelong Steely Dan fan I wonder if anyone can recommend any bands I should listen too to try and widen my horizons. As much as I love them I can't listen to them all the time and I have come a point in my life where I need to find some new stuff. Unfortunately alot of the new bands don't do alot for me. So bearing in mind the style of the Dan is there anyone you can recommend. Just to let you know I am not a Killers, Muse, Elbow or Kings of Leon fan. Many thanks

Sheffield band called Boy on a Dolphin are fabulous !
I am also a great fan of Steely Dan, but I think they are unique.

They are not a "typical" rock band as they care little for on stage postering or cultivating their image.

Their lyrics are clever and witty and the music is a great mix of rock and jazz.

They also spend longer than the average band producing their music, choosing the best musicians, and getting the right sound.

If I look at some of the bands listed on the "last.FM" site who they say are similar I find so many of them are nothing like Steely Dan.

Good luck in your search.
Also if you are a great fan of Steely Dan you may recognize this

Noah and the whale music is not "the Dan" but lyricaly very smart.

Your not going to find another Steely Dan. Is there anyone else you like.
Hi Chrissy Boy

As you can probably tell by the name, I'm also a major DanFan.

One band you might want to check out is Jango who namecheck several Steely Dan songs in their first album "Dreamtown". The single, 'City of the 2nd chance" is the closest thing to a Steely Dan song I've ever heard. Other albums are Red Ray Dawn and Closer to Home.

The album CPR (Crosby Pevar Raymond) is another one which Steely Dan fans seem to like

Love and Money's 'Strange Kind of Love' album was produced by Gary Katz and has some really strong songs.

Walter Becker produced the China Crisis Album 'Flaunt the Imperfection' and it really is an album I never tire of listening to. He also produced half of the Diary of a Hollow Horse album.

There's an obscure band called Toy Matinee with one self titled album that you might like and also a band fronted by another DanFan Don Breithaupt called Monkey House which takes a lot of inspiration from Steely Dan but might be hard to track down.

Did you get the Walter Becker solo album 'Circus Money' btw? If so what did you think?
Found City of the 2nd Chance by Jango on YouTube (load of text at the start before the song starts)
