Volvo Wins Top Marks For Safety

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Volvo has scored top marks in the motor industry's anti-whiplash ratings. Alongside Saab, Volvo was one of only two manufacturers to receive the top motor insurance rating. Volvo achieved an ‘All Good’ rating, with top ‘Good’ scores for every model tested.

The vehicles were tested by Thatcham of Surrey on behalf of the motor insurance industry's International Insurance Whiplash Prevention Group (IIWPG). The test included 182 different vehicles of various makes and models.

All the Volvos tested used the Volvo Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which moves the entire backrest to absorb energy during a rear end collision. In the event of an accident, the entire backrest moves rearwards to reduce the strain on the occupant’s back and neck. Then, when their back has been safely restrained by the backrest, it inclines backwards in order to reduce the force that would otherwise throw their head forwards.

"Volvo has shown a continuing commitment to safety, and their seats once again performed very well in our tests," commented a representative of the motor insurance test centre.

"This is supported by real world injury data which confirms that these seats do produce a significant reduction in whiplash injuries - Volvo continue to be the trend setter in this area," he added.
