UK Motorways Apparently Most Congested In EU

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Recent research by the Road Users Alliance (RUA) has found that motorways in the UK are the most jammed in Europe.

UK roads carry over 93 per cent of all passenger travel, but take up less than one per cent of the UK's land mass, claims the RUA. The road network, particularly the motorway system, is in desperate need of higher investment. Otherwise we will be left with increasing traffic and nowhere for it to go.

In terms of the overall length of motorway per size of population, the UK is 15th in Europe, and they are congested despite the country having lower levels of car ownership than the EU average.

And the congestion is adding to drivers' motor insurance premiums as a large number of accidents are due to the increasing amount of traffic congestion on the roads.

"Despite paying the highest fuel taxes in Europe, we have one of the worst road networks," commented an RUA Director.

"In the last decade these taxes have bought us a less than one per cent increase in motorway capacity, which is struggling to support a massive 37 per cent increase in motorway traffic," he added.
