UK Car Repair Industry Promises Code Of Conduct

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The UK motor industry has announced plans for a national code of conduct and service levels for the motor repair industry. UK mechanics have been repeatedly hit by scandals about pricing, rip-offs and below standard workmanship.

An area particularly focused on is the cost of servicing, which can vary by as much as several hundred pounds for the same car at mechanics within the same area.

Consumer groups, the motor insurance industry and regulators have been pressuring the auto industry to come up with a code of standards for several years.

The initiative by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) to gain Office of Fair Trading (OFT) approval for its new scheme is a last ditch attempt to avoid outside legislation.

"There are many questions which the industry will need to answer as the process of self-regulating takes shape," said the secretary of state for consumer affairs.

"Not least of these will be how to produce schemes which are attractive to all levels in the sector, and attainable by all, and yet which will still achieve OFT recognition by delivering on the technical and ethical issues."
