Ten Million Admit Thought Of Motorway Driving Causes Cold Sweat

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Ten million drivers in the UK admit that just the thought of venturing onto a motorway is enough to bring them out in a cold sweat, reveals motor insurance research.

One in five women told motor insurance researchers that they simply avoid motorways altogether.

Motor insurance companies believe that these drivers are subject to a condition called "Driving Anxiety Order". Younger and older women are particularly prone to the condition, they added.

Tailgating is the largest source of motorway worries, while driving at night and in fog were also likely to trigger anxiety.

Motor insurance companies say there are some simple ways to relieve anxiety on the road, including planning your route effectively and ensuring plenty of time for your journey.

Checking the car over can be a source of reassurance, as can controlling your breathing. If necessary, motor insurance companies recommend further driver training as a way to build confidence behind the wheel.

"It's easy to believe that every other road user is a confident, capable driver, but it's simply not the case," said a motor insurance spokeswoman.

"In fact, one in every three drivers we surveyed admitted that they felt anxious and stressed about driving on motorways. Driving anxiety is entirely treatable and there is lots of help available."
