Motor Repairers Hit Back Against Criticism

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

In the ongoing debate about standards of service and rip off pricing in the motor repair industry, the engineers have struck back.

The Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) evaluates skills and competence and makes members sign a code of conduct on the level of service they provide, supported by the motor insurance industry.

They are then supplied with an identity card and their details are registered on an online directory of certified members. All members must be reassessed every five years to remain in the scheme.

"ATA clearly identifies proven current competence, which is as important to consumers as it is to businesses seeking qualified technicians," said a motor insurance spokeswoman.

"The level of support within the motor industry would suggest that at least 50 per cent of businesses involved in vehicle servicing and repair nationwide will be actively supporting ATA within the next five years."

To ensure good service car owners should make certain that their garage is familiar with their make of car and be honest about any recent faults it may have had.

Always check what is included in the service and ask for a breakdown of all charges. Get the name of the mechanic who will be actually carrying out the work, and go to them if there are any problems.
