Motor Insurance Firms Warn Of Speed Camera Disdain

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motor insurance companies have warned that the continued expansion of speed cameras on our roads is breeding complacency among drivers.

Motorists have grown to expect having a few points on their licence, say motor insurance firms.

This has devalued the system of using cameras in sensitive places, such as near spots where children play, and has de-stigmatised speeding penalties.
Motor insurance firms admit that they can now no longer use a speeding conviction as a reliable indicator of risky driving.

"Drivers often regard speed cameras with disdain and some adjust their driving style accordingly," said a motor insurance manager.

"How many times do you see drivers brake sharply to pass through a camera and then accelerate again?”

"This is not good driving practice and it actually increases the chances that following cars will not respond to the change of speed in enough time to avoid an accident. Far from promoting road safety, there is an argument that in some locations speed cameras can even cause accidents," he added.

Car insurance policyholders may find their premiums increased should any penalty points be placed on their licence.
