Learner Drivers To Receive Eco Testing

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Learner drivers are to face a new challenge when they sit their driving test: they will be judged on how environmentally friendly their driving is.

In a departure from traditional motor insurance concerns of safety, drivers will be judged on their ability to conserve fuel while driving.

This will be doing things like smooth acceleration and braking. Anticipating hazards in advance and so being able to smoothly control the car.

It is a well known fact that cars burn fuel more inefficiently when the accelerator is used harshly and many modern cars are fitted with a heads up which informs the driver of the miles per gallon which can encourage more effective use of the accelerator.

There may be a connection with safety, however, say motor insurance firms, as drivers who accelerate and brake suddenly will be penalised.

The new eco-friendly teaching is being phased into lessons and text books and is now required component of the test.

The EU has estimated that if all drivers in Europe adopted more eco friendly driving habits, it may save 25 billion litres of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by at least 50 million tonnes.
