Just One Drink Can Cause A Car Accident

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The motor insurance industry and safety campaigners are warning that even having just one drink can greatly increase the chances of having a road accident.

Seasonal drink driving campaigns have always concentrated on drivers who are recklessly over the limit.

But party goers are being warned that even spending your evening nursing a single pint of lager will seriously impair your ability to maintain control of a vehicle.

"We have said for a long, long time that drivers should not drink at all," said a spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

He points out that motor insurance research has shown that a driver, who has a single drink, even if they remain well below the legal limit, increases their chances of being in a fatal accident six-fold.

"We are now one of the few countries in Europe that has such a high limit," said a representative of the independent Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) think-tank.

"When they lowered their limit from 50mg per 100ml of blood to 20mg per 100ml of blood in Sweden, they saw a significant reduction in road accident deaths."
