Five Million UK Drivers Can't Change A Tyre

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Over five million motorists in the UK say that they would be left stranded if they caught a flat tyre, says motor insurance research, because they never learned to change a wheel.

Around four million have put the wrong fuel in their cars, and almost a fifth does not know how to check coolant levels.

As well as being slightly embarrassing, these deficiencies can be both costly and dangerous if you are unable to move your vehicle and have to call an engineer.

"It's a real concern that so many regular motorists don't know the basics," said an auto patrolman.

"Simple checks like making sure tyres are properly inflated and not worn could mean significant savings on fuel costs and also reduce the chances of a serious accident."

Further results of the motor insurance survey revealed that more than a million drivers don't know how to check their engine oil and one motorist in a hundred doesn't know how to open their bonnet.

He advises reading the manual and doing regular checks will reduce breakdowns. He also recommends investing in good breakdown and motor insurance cover which will protect you against the unexpected.
