Fifty Per Cent Of Drivers Admit They Are 'Road Runners'

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Fifty per cent of all motorists say that if they struck an unattended vehicle they would drive off without leaving their motor insurance details – if they believed they could get away with it.

However, 50 per cent of all drivers told researchers that they had already been victims of what motor insurance firms call "road runners."

Legally, drivers are required to stop and provide their name and address if they cause damage while driving. If they are unable to, or the owner of the damaged car is absent, they are expected to report the accident to the police within 24 hours.

Official figures show that the number of 'road runners' is growing, with women and young people both less likely to leave their motor insurance details after a prang.

"Honest policyholders are forced to pay an extra £30 a year for their motor insurance just to pay for the damage and injury caused by uninsured and untraced drivers," said a motor insurance spokesman.

"Motorists who cause damage to other vehicles should take responsibility for their actions. If a motorist does not leave their details at the scene of the accident and fails to report the incident to the police, they are committing a criminal offence ".
