Clowns Overcharged For Motor Insurance

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motorists' choice of profession will dictate the motor insurance quotes they are offered, it has been revealed.

Comedians and choirmasters can pay up to £200 a year more for their motor insurance cover than clergymen, even if they drive the same car and live in the same area, says the motor insurance research.

Researchers obtained quotes for 365 careers, assuming that the fictional person was 35, male, lived in the Vale of Glamorgan and drove a Vauxhall Astra 1.8. They were quoted fully comprehensive rates with a maximum no-claims bonus.

Bank managers had the lowest motor insurance premiums, at just over £300, and professional footballers the highest, at nearly £700, motor insurance researchers found. The second cheapest rates were paid by teachers at around £330 while the second dearest were faced by comedians, at over £660.

"Although occupation is just one element that can affect your motor insurance quotes, making sure that you put down the right career is critical," said a motor insurance expert.

"Take, for example, a TV broadcaster paying £448 for their motor insurance; if they'd described themselves as a TV announcer they'd have to pay an average motor insurance premium of £681."
