Check Your Car Before The Season Changes

12:30 Wed 01st Feb 2012 |

Most motorists in the UK will admit to getting a service probably only once a year at the same time as the MOT and then really do nothing with their cars apart from top up the washer bottle. While this basic maintenance is still good it really is not enough to keep their cars in tip top condition.

Ideally if time and budget allows you should get your car checked every three months by a professional. Items that need attention include:

  • 1. Getting the battery checked.

  • 2. Get the filters assessed.

  • 3. Have the brakes looked over.

In addition, getting the oil replaced with a synthetic product that is designed for longer use may extend the life of your car and could prevent a costly insurance claim.

Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure, this is the only bit of the car actually in contact with the road and is often overlooked. In the winter it is beneficial to let the engine idle for a few seconds before driving and drive slowly for the first few miles to ensure the oil is fully warmed up. Make sure your coolant system is full as it is easy for pipes to split in cold weather and coolant to be lost. Your car can still overheat even in winter!

In the summer things need looking at too. It can be helpful to change your anti-freeze for coolant to help prevent overheating. Also if the car is to be left standing for a long period while you are away on holiday then make sure it is secure and have jump cables handy in the boot in case it doesn’t start. Also keep the washer bottle topped up to clean away dust and bugs that build up on the windscreen if there is no rain.
