Carjacking – Do Not Let Them Get Your Car

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Drivers who could do without the inconvenience of a motor insurance claim need to be wary of carjackers, it has been suggested.

A leading stolen vehicle recovery systems specialist issued this warning following a number of occasions where motors were stolen after being left unattended with the engine running. It highlighted a number of common vehicle-related crimes and urged people to be on their guard.

Burglaries where car keys are stolen were highlighted as being the main risk to motorists. The company explained this was particularly common when keys were left on hall tables or kitchen worktops in plain sight.

Another growing crime involves criminals who steal drivers' identities in order to forge documents and obtain a duplicate car key. A spokesman from the company said: "Gone are the days when cars were stolen by smashing the side window and hot wiring the ignition."

Carjacking is stealing a car while its owner is present. This can be done using threats or violence to secure the car keys from the car's owner. Cars stolen in this way will typically end up on the streets of Eastern Europe or Africa, being shipped out for resale very quickly through established criminal networks.
