BT Launches Vehicle Satellite Tracking

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

BT has launched an innovative scheme that uses satellite tracking to locate stolen cars. Users of the BT Trackit system use a special smartcard to 'login' when they start the ignition.

If someone does not use the smartcard, a transponder concealed in the car alerts a BT call centre and the satellite tracking is turned on. BT also contacts the police and the owner, who can use the smartcard to remotely shut off the ignition. Users will be offered a discount on their motor insurance quotes.

The system received an unexpected trial run when the Trackit product manager had his Audi stolen outside his house. His car was found six miles from his home 50 minutes after he discovered that it had been taken.

"I couldn't believe it when I discovered my car had been stolen," he commented.

"I suppose it was an opportunity to put BT Trackit to the test for real. I was very relieved to get it back safely."

Users will also receive a "level one" police response which means that officers are dispatched as quickly as possible.

The savings to be made on motor insurance quotes may be somewhat cancelled out by the cost of the system however, which will set you back an initial £350. The annual subscription costs between £600 and £1,000. The service works in up to 27 European countries.
