Fire engines, ambulances, military vehicles, gritting lorries and road maintenence vehicles etc are all exempt from displaying a tax disc....except for the police who do have to tax their cars and vans. Anyone know why? (posted this elsewhere before I realised this would be the best place.. sorry)

I think it is because all services except the police are funded by the government, police are funded by local government.
road maintenece vehicles do pay road tax, fire engines and ambulances do have tax like the police but dont pay for it because the belong to the queen so to speak, gritters dont need tax because they r on the queens highways and not used for every day use,the millatry are the queens merry men so they dont have to pay but they all have to display a valid tax disc
