How long can you have an out-dated tax disc on your car before it would be deemed as illegally parked on a road?

If the vehicle has no tax and it's on the road it's illegal from midnight on the day the tax expires (or so I believe)
Straight away if you haven't renewed it or haven't sorned it. DVLA will send you a another reminder after a month...it's the traffic wardens that might catch you out.

Excellent! There has been a car parked right outside my house for about 2 months now and the tax disc ran out at the end of Feb. There is no notice on it saying "in post" or anything like that and there is a flyer under the windscreen wiper which has been there for 2 weeks.

I'm reporting it!
You sad individual. How do you know whether the owner has not been involved in some family crisis eg death of a loved one etc and has forgotten in all the stress. It's only the 5th March. Give them the benefit of the doubt for a while longer. Jeez.

Calm down CAS. I think it has been abandoned. As I said it has been parked outside my house for around 2 months.
My tax disc ran out end of Feb...I renewed it on-line on the 26th and haven't received it yet.
Question Author
Thats quite a long time Ummmm. All the times I have applied online I usually get it in the post within 2 to 3 days.
The tax has only been out of date for 4.5 days tho. One day you'll make a genuine mistake - would you like someonelse to punish you? Do unto others and all that.
Question Author
Ok, point taken.
I'm not worried...I have the receipt to prove I've paid. Just pointing out that mine is taxed but I don't have the disc yet. It ran out the same time as the car in your question.
Good tigger, I'm glad I got my point across.
Question Author
If mine had run out and I hadn't received it yet I would put a note in it saying it was in the post CAS.
Question Author
And for the record, I know I'm a sad individual but there is no need for you to hammer it home.
A note saying it was in the post is usless. It's all recorded on computer so a quick check by a traffic cop / warden would reveal this however, there is also the offence of 'failing to display a valid tax disc'

from the DVLA website:
A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles.
Well I can't make the disc come any faster...But like CAS says...it's all on computer.

I'm going to wait until next week and see if anything appears.

I think its just me being annoyed that it has been parked outside my house for so long. I know I don't have any rights to the bit of road outside my house but I would like to be able to park my car there which I can usually do but obviously not for the last few months.
Question Author
I obviously have issues! Lol

I suppose it would have been recorded on the DVLA system that you were awaiting a refund.
yes you are sad...and i would make sure i told you to your face if you did that to me.

that happened to me once...my car broke down and i left it across the road from me...it was fully taxed and the neighbours knew it...but the disc fell off the window and was lying in the footwell of the car - still totally visible, had they looked - but they reported it...first i heard was when the council informed me if it wasnt moved by 4 that day itd be towed!....i just put the disc back and put a polite but sarcastic note in the the window, and that was it...i absolutely did not move it.

these were neighbours who live opposite me...they must have seen my car a million times and know whose it was and knew it wasnt abandoned - i had had it for about 4 years!...yet they decided to pull a stunt like this....childish...and makes certain i would not lift a finger in a neighbourly fashion for them ever...and if i even find out which one of them it was i will make my feelings known.

i now make sure i park outside their houses as often as possible too...as i am entitled to do.
