Can a small chip in a windscreen really turn into a large crack if the car drives over a pothole or an iced windscreen is heated as in the Autoglass TV adverts????

Yes.
Yes.
Some 'lovely' little urchin on his way home from school threw a stone at my truck about 5 years. It left a little 'bullet hole' at the bottom of the screen. By the time I got to the yard about 2 hours later, the crack was 18" long!

I sometimes think about that on icy mornings, as I throw a jug of hot water over my frozen windscreen.
It happened to me some years ago,I had a small crack in windscreen about 2 inches long, put windscreen heater on full blast to de-ice,cracked all the way to top of windscreen.
yes, but shop around if you are not doing it uunder your insurance. and be sure if you do do it under your insurance, it does not push your premiums up at all.

i once got quoted by Autoglass £550 for a new windscreen including fitting.

went to another company and got one for £107 including fitting.

needless to say who i went with...
Exactly Milo. My Mk2 Golf needed a new windscreen about 4 years ago. The RAC quoted me £240 - minus 10% for being a member. I rang a local firm and they came round and fitted a new windscreen for £65!
Jogger Jane, kettle of hot water over a freezing screen is never a good idea :(
