I heard that the "new" driver has to go on an unsupervised drive for 10 mins or so!
The question is HOW are they going to moniter or supervise this incase of something "dangerous" happening e.g needing to perform an emergency stop etc Any instructors out there I would be greatfull for an answer as wifey is starting to learn to drive. Thanks

You misunderstand. The examiner will still be in the passenger seat, they just won't be saying 'turn left, turn right' etc. As I understand, the learner will be shown a map of a route from A to B and have to drive there with no direction prompting from the examiner, though you won't fail if you take a wrong turn (as long as its not a 'No Entry' or something). The idea is to see if the learner can cope with making route decisions whilst driving.
I heard the Asst. Chief Examiner say that drivers will be give either a verbal set of instructions to follow, ie. 'take the second left then third right at the roundabout and first left.' The driver can ask for these instructions to be repeated. OR, the examiner may ask the driver to ' follow the signs to (say) Dorking'.

The examiner remains in the car, of course !
